Gerald pushed his walker along the secluded path. “I’m not sure about this,” he said in a hushed voice.
“But you are here,” replied his youthful looking companion Jean.
“If you hadn't told me your tale I am not sure we would be anywhere,” he replied as he looked over at her youthful countenance. “How old are you again?” he inquired as she opened the door to the sanctuary.
As Gerald passed in front of her through the door she replied, ”86.” She sprang to the next door and opened it with ease.
Gerald eased over to the bench that was located beside the door. “Tell me again exactly what you had to do.”
“Nothing really,” came the reply. “I walked up to the front,” she said, indicating the bubbling brook, “and placed my hands in the water.
Gerald looked at her sceptically. “Just like that?”
Jean smiled. “Just like that,” she said as she snapped her fingers.
“It sounds like those old television preachers. ‘Rise! You Are Healed!” and the people would cast away their pain and rise through divine intervention.”
Jean smiled and patted Gerald’s hand as she stood up. “It might seem that way but it’s not,” she said soothingly.
“I know,” he said. “Why isn’t there anyone else here? You would think that a place like this would be crawling with people itching to be healed.” Gerald stood up and inched his way forward.
“I don’t bring just anyone to my house,” said Jean. “Only the worthy can be a part of this divine intervention.
They stood before the bubbling brook. “Just put your hands in. You will notice the difference right away.”
Gerald nodded. “What is with the test tube and stopper?” he inquired.
“To catch those fleeting moments,” she replied. Gerald let go of his walker and placed his hands into the brook. At that exact moment Jean corked the test tube with the stopper catching a smoky residue.
Jean looked down at the crying baby carefully wrapped in a blanket. “No more pain. Your memories are safe with me,” she said as she picked him up and walked to a side door. Pushing the door open she spotted the young couple who were eagerly waiting there.
“Your new child,” she said warmly as she placed the baby into their loving arms.
Oh my! What a surprise ending. 😯
