“You’re supposed to get into the lifeboat, not hang on to the side,” said David with a smirk from thirty feet above Tana. The water was quickly closing in. Her flailing about in an effort to get a foot over the gunwale had so far been in vain. Many people had been yelling and it distracted Tana from trying to save herself. She looked down and then looked back up as hands reached over the side and hauled her into the lifeboat as it splooshed into the darkened sea.
“At least I am going to survive,” Tana yelled back at him. Her churlish spell dissipated and what was left filled her with regret. Sending insults in response to his making humour of a bad situation was not a positive step.
She looked up in time to see a perfect swan dive off the rising railing. A small sploosh sent plumes of water skyward. A head quickly surfaced causing Tana to gasp. A few arm movements later found David dogpaddling beside the lifeboat.
“What are you doing?” Tana inquired. “This life boat is for women and children.”
As he pulled himself over the side he took a look around. “It looks like you could handle another occupant,” he replied as he was handed a blanket. He turned to Tana and placed a strong kiss on her lips. “I love you too,” he said as she pulled back.
Tana’s eyes welled up. “I love you. Now grab an oar and start paddling.”
David smiled. “Only if you say you will marry me.”
“What?”
“We have been through so much together. I can’t see me ever being with another woman who is so warm and loving, full spunk and humour.” He looked at her with intent. “Well?”
Murmurs in the boat started immediately.
“He almost died so you could survive..”
“I would if I was you. Look at him. He’s gorgeous.”
Tana stepped forward. “I would be honoured.” She handed him an oar. “Time to start earning your keep.”
