“What are you studying today?”
Carissa looked up from her phone to find her pen on the table and started writing. “Notes on the reasons people talk to inanimate objects.”
Clarence chuckled. “Find anything interesting?”
Keeping her head down Carissa answered. “Nothing spectacular so far. It’s a coping mechanism that helps people to organize and understand.” She made further notes before looking back at her phone.
“I see.” Clarence responded. “Talking to inanimate objects helps us make sense of the world.”
“Yes,” said Carissa. “Sometimes it is for companionship and social connection, especially if the person has become isolated.”
“Like spending too much time studying?” inquired Clarence.
Carissa refocussed her engines on her phone feeling a bit frustrated. “It sometimes gives us control over our environment.” She thought for a minute before picking up her pen again. “But sometimes it is annoying like now,” she said looking over at the poster glued to the wall behind her. A smile crossed Clarence’s face as he winked at her. She shook her head slowly. “I really need to get a handle on this.”
His voice faded. “Til next time.”
Carissa doubted that there would be a next time as she scanned her phone for more information.

Nearly all her talk was directed at her phone (inanimate object), and not at Clarence. Nice device underlying the action.
I spend a good amount of time talking to myself. 😊 Sometimes I answer back.
