I chose to write in a Storystack for this prompt.

25 words

“Love builds. Love grows. Love changes you.”

Manny laughed. “Things won’t change.”

“It’s too late. They already have,” Freddie said with a touch of regret.

50 words

“Bro, where ya been? The boys have been hanging at the pool hall, playing cards and shooting dice. Some of the girls have been asking about you. You been missing in action, man.”

“Don’t do that no more,” Cruz mumbled. “Got to do right by Danielle. She deserves the best.”

100 words

Amy hung up the phone and looked at her computer lost in her thoughts.

“Should I? Shouldn’t I?” she mused as she considered his big blue eyes and his latest proposal for the weekend.

“Amy, have you completed the document for today’s presentation?”

“What?” Amy asked with confusion. “The presentation is tomorrow.”

“Nooo,” her boss drew out. “The presentation is in three hours. Is everything alright?”

Amy looked up. “He is just so handsome.”

“Amy, you need to focus. I need your document in 30 minutes.”

“It’ll be done,” she replied as Sally walked away. Just then the phone rang.

150 words

“You don’t know how fortunate I am to have you as my girl.”

Kailani smiled before putting on her serious face. “Are you kidding me? Of course you are fortunate to have me for your girl.” She laughed which caught Clem off guard. “I saw what you were, where you were coming from and definitely where you were headed to.”

Clem smiled. “It wasn’t pretty but then there you were. If it wasn’t for you I would have ended up in serious trouble.”

“Uh huh.”

“So what did you see in me?”

Kailani looked him square in the eye. “Possibilities.”

“Possibilities?”

“Oh yeah. When you weren’t swaggering, when you were alone talking to regular people, not your homies, there was something kind and sweet. You are interesting. Not to mention that you read interesting books and can talk about things more deeply than most other guys can. So yeah, possibilities.”

300 words

“A date?”

“Yes, a real date.”

“Seriously?”

Shanice took Malcolm’s hand. “Seriously. A real date. One where people who will see us on the date know that we belong together.”

“But we’ve been together for months now,” Malcolm started.

“And while we have been seen in public, we always are with our friends or family. Those times are fun but now we need to do more by ourselves. I need to see that you are serious.”

“But I am serious,” exclaimed Malcolm “Didn’t I buy you that nice ring? And that necklace that you are wearing. Those show that I am serious.”

“They are nice but they don’t show me the commitment. They don’t show me a deep personal love. I need to see that.” She looked at the ring. “I can take them off and give them back.” Malcolm blanched as she started and stopped. “A commitment is spoken from the heart. It is more than you can buy for me. It is those heartfelt moments that speak volumes to me.”

“Doing something special?” Shanice nodded. “Something that is heartfelt?” Shanice nodded again.

“If we are going to spend the rest of our lives together we will need to do those special things and honour us in special moments that only we two will know about. That is where my heart is.”

Malcolm was sweating at the prospect of reaching her through this new endeavour. “How will I know if a moment is special?”

“If you have to ask me then it probably isn’t. Think about those special things I have done for you.”

Malcolm reflected for a minute. “Okay. Challenge accepted.”

“It’s not a challenge. It is what love is.”

“I learn something new everyday,” reflected Malcolm as he started thinking about how to further demonstrate his love.
